The bands I've chosen are very different between themselves: Meat Loaf ( Rock Opera), Muse (Alternative rock) and Fito Paez an Argentinian rock and roll pianist. I could talk about so many others like Billy Joel, Elton John, Joaquin Sabina, Bon Jovi ( his early music), Journey, Boston...etc But these are the ones I've been listening to most lately. So let us begin.
I discovered Muse recently, like maybe a year and a half ago. I was originally attracted by their name, but then my brother's scared me away saying that they were glorified Radiohead wannabees. And so I didn't pay much attention to them But then a friend of mine pushed me to listen and I was hooked. Matt Bellamy ( the main singir and song-writer) writes in a way that motivates me to push forward. He makes me fall in love, he drepresses me, he never bores me. He inspires me, which is perfect given his chosen band name. Songs like " Butterflies and Hurricanes", " Survivor", " Uprising", " Resistance" " Madness" They just move you no matter what type of music you like, you end up head banging and trying to reach Bellamy's high notes. His singing is charismatic and wrapped in feeling.
Speaking of being wrapped in feeling, I'll use this chance to talk about my second chosen band, Meat Loaf. Most of my music taste I inherited from my father, an all time 80s rocker. He's a drummer, and he's dedicated his life to educate me on what is good music. He took me to Journey's, Styx, Cheap Trick, and 38 Special's concerts. And I've loved every single one. ( It broke my heart when i couldn't go to Elton John's concert...)
But This Band is one of my dad's jewels. This Rock - Opera singer is one of the 80's spectacle singer. He's a performer and an actor. His lyrics are mostly written by famous song-writer Jim Stainman. ( You may not think you know him, but you do: He's the culprit behind masterpieces like Bonnie Tyler's " Total Eclipse of the heart" and Air Supply's " Making love out of nothing at all" and Barbara's Streisan's " Left in the dark" ) Meat Loaf is my favorite performer. He has a powerful voice and the mixture of opera-like melodies with the motorcycle-noise-guitar in the background just makes the ambiance rich and somber. Songs like " Bat out of hell" and " I would do anything for love" are masterpieces amongst other divine rock and roll hymns.
The poetry in all of those songs is rich and dark and enticing. Each song is a short story.
The first time I ever cried by just listening to a song was by listening to Meat Loaf's " Objects in mirror are closer than they appear".
And speaking of pianists, this brings me to my chosen artist #3, Fito Paez.
" Filosofías de arrabal, mártires del rock and roll
discutiendo entre las piernas del dolor el álgebra de la vida moderna.
Y al final nunca se como empezar a decirte, a gritos,
que necesito mas que respirar, que necesito escapar,
del purgatorio del sobrevivir..." - Vida Moderna
You could listen to a song like "Es solo una cuestion de actitud"and be pumped and ready to take on the day, but then you'll listen to "La despedida" and you'll just fall back depressed on your bed with a bowl of ice cream. He brings you up as he brings you down.
"Tendré que hacer lo que es y no debido
Tendré que hacer el bien y hacer el daño
No olvides que el perdón es lo divino
Y errar a veces suele ser humano..."
